Misdemeanor Charges Demand Serious Attention

While generally considered less serious than a felony charge, misdemeanors are serious. Facing a misdemeanor may not put you at risk of the most devastating penalties Texas law offers. Still, it does impede your freedom and impacts your permanent record.

At Dornburg Law, we are experienced attorneys fighting for the rights of our clients in Victoria and across the area. When you face a misdemeanor charge, you want to ensure that you have a defense willing to fight aggressively to defend you. Even a minor conviction can follow you for a long time.

Misdemeanor Penalties Up Close

When clients come to us with misdemeanor charges, we educate them about the risks and penalties for their charges. While some charges can carry specific penalties, a misdemeanor falls into three classifications:

  • Class C misdemeanor: punishable by a $500 fine
  • Class B misdemeanor: punishable by a jail term of 180 days and a fine of up to $2,000
  • Class A misdemeanor: punishable by a jail term of up to 1 year and a fine of $4,000.

Some look at those penalties, especially for class C misdemeanors, and consider the cost of accepting the punishment. However, a conviction will follow you for a long time. Eventually, you may be able to get an expunction or have your records sealed, but that’s not a guarantee.
