5 ways to get around when your license is suspended for DWI

On Behalf of | Apr 7, 2025 | Occupational Driver's License

If you are arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI) or refuse to submit to a breathalyzer test, your driver’s license can be suspended. You will need to request a formal hearing to challenge the suspension.

Driving with a suspended license is unlawful – it can result in additional charges. Thus, you need to find other ways to move around. You can:

Use public transportation

Texas has a reliable public transportation system. For instance, in Victoria, dependable public transportation is provided by Victoria Transit, operated by the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission (GCRPC).  It serves different routes within the city and in surrounding rural areas. Thus, you can easily run your errands.

Ensure you are informed about the system’s working hours and scheduled bus stops.

Use ride-sharing services

Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft can help you get around when your license is suspended. You can book rides using an app and get door-to-door services, making this option convenient.

Walk or cycle

When running errands not too far from your house, you can walk or cycle. This option is more affordable, and it can help you stay fit.

Request rides from loved ones

You can also request rides from your family members and friends. For example, if you and a loved one share the same route to work, they can drop you off.

Apply for an occupational driver license

An occupational driver’s license is a special type of restricted license issued to drivers whose licenses have been suspended. This license will allow you to operate a non-commercial vehicle only when going to work, performing essential household duties or running school-related activities.

The above alternatives can make moving around more manageable when your license is suspended for a DWI. You should also obtain more information on how to defend yourself against the charge.
